The number of immigrants with Chinese ancestry living in New Zealand, particularly in Auckland, have been significantly increasing in recent years. In the 2013 census, the size of the Chinese New Zealander population stood at approximately 171,000.
In 2013, a group of NZ registered doctors with Chinese descent working in Auckland (Dr Derek Luo, Dr Andrew To, Dr Tina Sun, Dr Paul Cheng and Dr Willy Wang) had a vision to raise health awareness amongst the Chinese population in New Zealand. We had started an initiative: CHAINZ – Chinese Health Awareness Initiative New Zealand. The CHAINZ working group had been working closely in conjunction with the Auckland Chinese Medical Association (ACMA), a not-for-profit organisation for New Zealand Registered Medical Practitioners that aims to be beneficial to the community by serving as a voice on matters of medical or health concern, particularly for Chinese New Zealanders.
During the period between 4th April 2013 till 31st July 2014, by working with the World TV (a national Chinese multimedia company based in Auckland), the CHAINZ working group had been arranging a roster of medical and allied health speakers to go on an established LIVE TV talk show programme. The talk shows were filmed LIVE by a Mandarin-speaking host every Thursday night from 7pm to 8pm. It was broadcasted on WTV Chinese TV 8 (CTV 8) channel on Freeview digital channel 28, available to all New Zealanders (as well as via SkyTV channel 304 for Sky subscribers).
From the end of 2014, we have started planning a whole new set of initiatives (such as public charity events, video podcasts). This will be launched soon in 2015. Watch this space!
